Singing to Jesus with Our Hearts

Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.

How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me. He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him. Luke 1:46–50 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, I woke up this December Thursday very grateful for the music of Advent, and it’s a “no-brainer” why. Every Advent hymn, carol, and chorus voices our longings, fuels our hope, and exalts your name. Thank you for giving us so many reasons to praise, bless, and worship you.

Mary’s story is quite different from ours, and yet we join her song today. Indeed, we can sing her song. We’re compelled to sing her song, for you’ve been mindful of our humble, broken, sinful state, too. We have nothing to boast in but you, Jesus. You came to us when we weren’t seeking you. And you’re being formed in us as surely as you entered the world through Mary’s womb (Gal. 4:19).

We’re a blessed people because you’ve done great things for us, and you continue to do so. Holy is your name, Lord Jesus. We don’t have concern about what coming generations may say about us. But we’re thrilled to know what you say about us: that we’re yours—forgiven, declared righteous, desired, enjoyed, your Bride, and as loved now as we’ll be in the new heaven and new earth.

Your mercy has been extended to our generation, and to us personally. Therefore, we glorify you, Jesus, rejoice in you, and rest in your grace—our God and Savior. As the gospel goes deeper into our hearts, free us from every fear but the fear of the Lord.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, overwhelm us with a greater experience of every good thing we have in you. Joy to the world, indeed. You have come, and are coming again. So very Amen we sing and pray, in your most glorious and grace-full name.
