Shepherded by Jesus – Praying through Psalm – 23 Pt. 2

Vs. 4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

Jesus, you never promised us the journey Home would be easy, quick, or without overwhelming seasons and heartbreaking circumstances But you have promised never to leave or forsake us. In the darkest valley, keep us certain of your great love, unbroken nearness, and sovereign rule. We can handle mystery until heaven. It’s aloneness and “randomness” that undo us.

Vs. 5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.

Life ends with celebration not “a whimper,” for you are taking us to the feast of all feasts—the wedding feast of the Lamb. Make that more real than cancer, war, aging, and our brokenness. By the Gospel, be our portion and banquet—our daily nourishment and deepest satisfaction. Though enemies threaten, thank you for feeding us, “anointing” our lives your Spirit’s work, and giving us what we need and more—enough “blessings” to share with others.

Vs. 6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue (and follow) me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

Absolutely nothing will keep us from heaven, separate us from your love, or sabotage your plan for our lives. You are before us, over us, in us, and behind us. Only when we’re fully and forever with you will we understand how your goodness and mercy were at work in our most difficult stories. Until that uber-magnificent Day arrives, hold us tight and fill our hearts with palpable hope. Thank you Jesus. So Very Amen.
