A Scripture I Haven’t Been Faithfully Praying Lately

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

Heavenly Father, I begin this prayer repenting for having disregarded this clear admonition from the Scriptures. It’s been easier to scorecard and scorn those governing my country than to pray for them with faith and confidence.

It’s convicting to realize Paul was admonishing 1st Century Christians to pray for the Roman Government, including those who meant the church great harm.  Forgive me, not only for my prayerlessness, but also for my unbelief. Help me and my friends to become redemptive participants in the culture, not mere armchair cynics, coach-potato coaches, or social media whiners.

As the US Senate continues very important deliberations today about the next US Supreme Court Judge, grant honesty, wisdom, and integrity. Father, your hand and heart are not limited in this matter. We trust you, not the principal players. You raise up and set down kings, judges, rulers as your bidding.

There’s no panic or pause in heaven—no consternation, just adoration. Grant us a clearer vision of your Son, Jesus—the already installed Ruler of the kings of the earth, sovereign over all things and all places (Rev. 1:4-6; Psalm 2:4-9).

Only one kingdom is unshakable and eternal, and it is yours Father So as those called to a “peaceful and quite life”—not to angry and fearful attitudes, we lift our government officials to you in prayer today. We aren’t calling down fire on them, but the sovereign work of your Spirit.

As this day, and the coming days unfold, may we, as your children, give evidence to what “faith expressing itself in love” looks like (Gal. 5:6). No matter who sits on the Supreme Court of the United States, we are so thankful that you are comfortably, joyfully, and securely sitting on the ultimate throne of all thrones (Rev. 4:1ff). So very Amen we pray, in Jesus merciful and mighty name.
