Resting in Our Father’s Love and Faithfulness

 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;

with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. Psalm 89:1-2

Heavenly Father, as fully as your Spirit will enable, we want to rest today in the steadfastness of your love and the rock-steadiness of your faithfulness. Because of what you have done for us in Jesus, your love isn’t attached to any contingencies, variables, or anything in us. This is the best news ever.

Indeed, you won’t be using a scorecard, thermometer, or scale to measure our performance today, or any day. And there’s no chance we’ll inform, surprise, or shock you by anything we think, say or do today. The gospel is this good, freeing, and transforming.

Now, and forever, you deal with us according to Jesus’ righteousness, with which you’ve blessed and robed us. And when you discipline us, it’s never out of irritation or exasperation, but only by the favor and affection you’ve lavished on us in Jesus. Such kindness moves us to repentance like nothing else, Father. Such love compels us to love and serve you with everything we have and are.

Equally, Father, we praise you for your inviolate sovereignty and unwavering faithfulness. Nothing, and no one, can resist your will, alter your plans, or derail your decrees. As we think about global and local matters, issues in our hearts and longings for our families, this assurance gives a peace and joy not found anywhere else.

We want to live this February Friday remembering who we are in Christ, and whose we are totally by grace. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ trustworthy and worship-worthy name.
