Prayers for Preaching the Gospel to Our Hearts #4

Our Father’s love for us is unwavering and unfailing.

“I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.” Jeremiah 31:3

Most gracious Father, enlarge the chambers of my heart, that I might take in more of the wonder of this good news. You have drawn me to yourself with an unfailing, irresistible, powerful love—not because of anything in me, but because of everything in Jesus. Right now and forever, you love me with an unwavering, everlasting love. I cannot intensify, nor diminish, your love for me. Unaided, I don’t—I cannot believe this is true. By your Holy Spirit, I rest and rejoice in this astonishing reality. It makes me want to love and serve you with everything I have and am.

God loves us to the same degree, and with the same delight, he loves Jesus.

I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. John 17:23

Dear Lord Jesus, this one verse exposes how little I “get” the Gospel. Let me get this straight. You are telling me my heavenly Father loves me just as much as he loves you? There’s only one way this can possibly be true. When you spoke these words from the cross, “It is finished!”—you were speaking on behalf of all who trust you, including me. You took my sin, and I was given your righteousness. “Arise my soul, arise, and shake off your guilty fears,” lingering shame, and snarky unbelief. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
