Peace-Making, Strife-Avoiding, Jesus-Trusting

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matt. 5:9

It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. Prov. 20:3

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Prov. 19:21

Lord Jesus, this tapestry of verses has applications for every relationship, every day, in every place. But today I weigh and pray these Scriptures for we who belong to you, and call the USA home.

You’ve called us to be a light to the world, not a blight in our communities. Right now, we may be giving more blight than light. As votes continue to be counted and judges call courts into session, we need your grace, Spirit, and wisdom, Jesus.

This election is causing heightened strife and deep divisions—in families, between friends, and among Christians. Help us, Jesus. Humble us. Refocus us.

Believers I greatly respect view this election differently, and voted differently. Indeed, the “plans in the mind of a man” often don’t align with each other. But “it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Oh, Jesus, please help us trust that your purpose will stand—no matter if it validates or violates our plan and vote.

You’ve called us to peace-making—not peace-breaking, or peace-faking. If “every fool will be quarreling,” then every one of us should be praying, trusting, and loving. So very Amen we pray, in your great and gracious name.
