Jesus’ Joyful Kingship

But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” Heb. 1:8–9

Lord Jesus, nothing impacts us more than how we think about you. On our best days, we probably apprehend 1.2% of your actual glory. The more of you we see in the Scriptures, the more we’re compelled to love, adore, and worship you. Heaven will be an eternal journey of mining the inexhaustible wonders of your love and glory.

Today, this passage leads us to marvel at your joyful kingship—your lordship over everything, in every place, all the time. You delight to crush evil, and you rejoice in making all things new. Gladness is your anointing, and joy is your heartbeat. Forgive us for thinking less or other of you.

It’s comforting to know our Father has placed the government of the entire cosmos on your shoulders—especially in disruptive seasons like we’ve been living through these past few months. Your reign of grace and peace is expanding all the time. May it do so in our own hearts. Tame our fears. Shrink our anxieties. Supersize our trust and joy.

Indeed, you are the joyful King of the ages. Your throne will last forever and ever, and your Kingdom will never end. Hallelujah! Fill us with your joy, Lord Jesus. Fill us to overflowing. May it be the “fire in our bellies” compelling us to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. So very Amen we pray, in your endearing and enduring name.
