Jesus’ Eternal Enthronement in the Midst of Revolving-Door Rulerships

Of the Son (Jesus) he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy beyond your companions.” Heb.1:8–9

Lord Jesus, the more of you we see in the Scriptures, the more we’re compelled to worship, love, and trust you. Today, this passage leads us to marvel at your joyful kingship—your sovereignty over everything in every place all the time. Jesus, this is both mind boggling and heart comforting. You rule over valleys, vocations, volcanoes, votes, vacations … and all stuff starting with every other letter in the alphabet.

Forgive us for thinking less of you. Forgive us for living as though your kingship is honorific, theoretical, or only a future reality. Your address isn’t Buckingham Palace, but heaven’s throne.

The government of the entire cosmos already rests on your shoulders (Isa.9:6-7). And though we’d love to see your kingdom grow at the pace of a bamboo shoot, not a mustard seed, (Matt.13:31-32), nothing is more certain, present, and irresistible than your reign. “Unchangeable, unshakable, unstoppable … that’s what You are,” Jesus.

So tame our fears and shrink our pride. Topple our anxieties and supersize our trust—not just as America votes for a new president tomorrow, but also as doctors read our scans, as we pray for people we love, as we enter transitions we didn’t choose and stories we’d never write. “Even when we don’t see it, You’re working. Even when we don’t feel it, You’re working. You never stop, You never stop working,” Jesus.  Hallelujah, thank you, and So Very Amen
