Paul writing to his friends, “We were gentle among you—like a nursing mother caring for her young children.” (1Thess.2:7).
Cultivate “the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” (1Pet.3:4).
“Learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matt.11:29)
Lord Jesus, every time we orient our hearts towards you, you greet us, grace us, and grant us the perspective we need. You “school us” in the things that really matter—like humility and gentleness. Thank you and we are eager to learn and relearn. Here’s what we crave as we begin another work-week.
May your Spirit fill us with humility and gentleness, kindness and words of encouragement for others. At a time when many are easily triggered, thinned-skinned, and suspicious of “the other”—grant us the revolutionary power of a non-anxious, non-judgmental, caring presence. The most insecure shout the loudest. The most angry least enjoy your occupied throne and reign of grace. Resorting to harshness may create short term compliance, but it also guarantees long term distance.
As you spoke this world into existence, so speak quietness, peace, and caring deep into our hearts. Redemptively “shush”—quiet us with your love, Jesus (Zeph.3:17). Then liberate us for your glory and our tongues for your praise. Continue to show us where we’re not as free as you intend, as joyful as you pray, or as trusting as you deserve. So Very Amen we pray in your ever-so-glorious name.
