Hearing God Laugh in a World That Generates Fear and Anger

A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. Ps. 37:10–13 (NIV)

Heavenly Father, we so look forward to the day when we will actually hear you laugh—a laughter that already fills the courts of heaven and the chambers of eternity. Even now, by your Spirit and Word, turn up the volume on your majestic merriment and measureless joy.

That will be the Day when every expression of darkness and death, evil and folly, meanness and wickedness will be gone forever. You’ve promised that Day and Jesus secured it. Though not as quickly as we’d like, but more certainly than we can imagine, the Day of “all things new” is coming.

And as this Scripture highlights, it’s not the pompous, powerful and proud who will “inherit the earth and enjoy great peace.” Rather, it will be the “the meek.” That immediately thrusts our gaze on Jesus, who like a lamb (the Lamb) was lead to the cross—taking our sin, defeating the devil, and securing the transformation of all things.

Indeed, it’s only Jesus’ meekness and righteousness that has made us citizens of that blessed coming world. And as mind-boggling and heart-stretching as it is, you’ve actually made us co-heirs with Jesus of the new heaven and new earth (Rom. 8:17). Our wickedness deserves your judgment just as much as it requires your grace. Intensify our humility and meekness, and supersize our gratitude and hope.

When wicked plots and gnashing teeth seem to be on the increase and righteousness seems to be on the decrease, please, Father, allow us to hear your laughter. Forgive our fearful fretting, cynical unbelief, and vengeful musings, as we live towards that Day.

This world is more pregnant with your glory than it is filled with evil. May your joy be our strength, your promises be our confidence, and your story be our mission. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ tender and triumphant name.
