Gratitude for Our Perfect Father

Behold what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 Jn. 3:1 NIV

You have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. Rom. 8:15-16 NLT

Heavenly Father, on this Father’s Day, it’s an unparalleled joy to call you Father today—the perfect Father we’ve always longed for and desperately needed. Even the best earthly fathers just offer a taste of what it means to be your beloved daughters and sons. Our hearts overflow with peace and gratitude today, as we cry today, “Abba, Father!” There are so many things we are thankful for as your children, including these.

Thank you for adopting us—making your heart our home, Jesus our righteousness, and your sovereignty our sanity. Thank you for freeing us from our slavery to fear and foolishness, and our orphan-like ways. Thank you for giving us the Spirit of Sonship, a secure place in your family, and a future in the new earth beyond all imaginings.

Thank you for being the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, in every season of life. Thank you for promising to complete the work you began in us, and for only disciplining us in love—never shaming, condemning, or withdrawing from us.

And Father, thank you for grace to forgive our earthly fathers—those who didn’t love us as you intended, including those who broke our trust and hearts. Continue to heal us and redeem those stories. Also, Father, free us to parent and grandparent to your glory—to put new patterns of mercy and grace into our family’s heritage.

Lastly, Father, we thank you for the spiritual dads you’ve given us—our Gospel-Fathers who help us know you better, grow in grace, and live for your glory. Your generosity is beyond measure. You are such a good, good Father—all the time, in every way. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ merciful and mighty name.
