Heavenly Father, we crave the heart King David describes in this Psalm—especially as we start this day with a fresh international crisis brewing. Oh, for the Day of no more wars or rumors of wars—no more chemical weapons, missiles, or any form of aggression and evil. Until then, we long to have Good News hearts for a bad news world—a faith-fueled calm in response to upsetting news-feeds, unpredictable leaders, and uncertain outcomes.
By the truth and power of the gospel, may a faith-full heart beat within our breasts. Free us to trust and worship you more, and fear and vex less. You’ve hidden our lives safely in Christ; now make us less shakable when shaky things are going on—whether in Syria, our homes, or hearts.
You’re not calling us to be oblivious or impervious, in denial or dismissive of reality. But we do want to live with more peace in the storms of life, and with more “okay-ness” about not being in control. Settle and center us with a vision of the occupied throne of heaven (Revelation 4). Our theology tells us you’ve “got this one” well in hand, along with everything else. Make our head’s profession our heart’s possession—our ancient creed our present peace.
Help us accept “bad news,” not with shrugging shoulders, but with bended knees—not with passive resignation, but with active surrender to you, our all sovereign, all loving Father. Intensify our longing, anticipation, and hope in the return of Jesus. The Day of all-things-new cannot get here too soon, Father. So very Amen we pray, in his wonderful and merciful name.
