A Fresh Infusion of Grace into Our Relationships

Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved…

Lord Jesus, thank you that this is our truest, most life-defining, heart-encouraging, life-transforming identity. We are chosen by God (not choice people); holy (righteous in you and set apart for God’s purposes); and dearly loved (not merely, but dearly loved). All of this is true because of what you have done for us, Lord.

… clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Therefore, as we think about our relationships, we reach into the closet of the gospel and reach for these garments of grace. Jesus, grant us your compassion and kindness. We’re not called to fix anyone but love everyone—including our spouse, kids, co-workers, and neighbors.

Give us your humility and gentleness, lest we default to an irritated and critical spirit today. Free us from quick and harsh reactions. Jesus, increase our patience with trying people and “inconvenient” circumstances. Lengthen our fuse and enlarge our hearts. Help us see by your eyes, love with your grace, and serve as your hands.

13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Gentle our hearts and supersize our forbearance. Free us to forgive grievances (big and little ones) with speed and joy. May your once-and-for-all forgiveness of us, define and fuel our forgiveness of others. Help us Jesus. Each of us inhabits some complex and difficult relationships.

14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Not playing “make believe,” but really believing the gospel, we “put on” love—your love, Jesus. Because the gospel is true, you cannot love us more than you do in this moment, and you’ll never love us less. Your love is exquisite, and your love is enough. Love in us and through us today to your glory, Jesus. So very Amen we pray, in your merciful and mighty name.
