Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. (Ps. 143:8)

Lord Jesus, we’ve been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What we consume early will greatly impact the rest of our day. We’ve proven this true, especially on those mornings when meager sleep segues into a way-too-busy day, and we binge on too much caffeine and sugar. Up like a rocket, down like a rock.

But on a far, far more profound level, what we consume spiritually, as the day begins, determines a lot more than how much we’ll yawn before noon. A breakfast of your truth, mercy, grace is essential. So out of equal measures of delight and desperation, we make the psalmist’s cry our own: “Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love” (Ps. 143:8). That’s what we need more than anything else, early in this day and week.

Jesus, only your love is better than life. Only your love can satisfy our deepest needs and greatest longings. No human love is enough. Only your love is unwavering; for all other loves are filled with conditions and contingencies, if’s and only’s, fine print and expiration dates. Only your love is trustworthy; all other loves are fickle and finite.

Only your love can expose and replace our idols, broken cisterns, and fool’s gold. Only your love can heal the greatest heart-wounds we carry and the darkest secrets we bury. Only your love can move us from navel-gazing to kingdom living, from pettiness to peace; from Point A of our insecurities, criticisms, and fears, to Point B of your wonder, love, and praise.

So, this morning, and every morning, afternoons and evenings too, pour your love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Continue to stun, center, and gentle us with truth and riches of the gospel—the foundation and fountain of your matchless love. So very Amen we pray, in your triumphant and trustworthy name.
