De-Cluttering and Re-Centering Our Hearts on Jesus

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matt. 6:19-21 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, having recently finished some long-overdue work in our closets, drawers, and garage, I was overwhelmed at the sheer mass of stuff that needed to be carted off. Clutter is like zucchini; it just seems to keep spreading and multiplying. Once a treasure, now a dust-catching bother.

Closets and garages are one thing, hearts and minds another. The older I get, the less heart-storage space there is, and I don’t want to finish my journey into eternity with a distracted mind and a cluttered heart.

So help me de-clutter and re-center on you, Jesus. In a world of multiple distractions, I want to finish my days with one great consuming affection—making and keeping you my treasure. I’m sure I’m not alone in this desire.

Jesus, we love you because you first loved us; and we’ll treasure you, to the extent we really believe you treasure us, as your beloved Bride and eternal inheritance. So by the Holy Spirit, once again, rearrange the price tags in our hearts. Once again, may we say with childlike wonder and joy, “I consider all things rubbish compared to the surpassing excellency of knowing Jesus” (Phil. 3:7-10).

Once again, let our relationships and schedule, our thoughts and our words demonstrate that our delight is in you, and our desire is for you, Jesus. So very Amen we pray, in your triumphant and tender name.
