Believing, Abiding, Rejoicing

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love… I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:9-11

Lord Jesus, how can it be? How is it possible you love us just as much as the Father loves you? And abiding in your love, as our main preoccupation in life? What a privilege, necessity, and, at times, hard battle to win.

Why is it so hard for us to believe you love us this much, and intend your joy to fill us up? On a daily basis, we encounter…

Our dogged unbelief

Our multiple Gospel-allergies

The seducing, condemning lies of Satan

Jesus, take us “further up and farther in” to the ways and means of grace. Your Word is the scalpel and surgery room for healing our hearts of our unbelief. Your Spirit is your active hand in this liberating “operation.”

So what are we to do? Stay on the operating table. Trust, surrender, and obey you. Keep showing up for surgery. Make time for getting healthy and free. Indeed, “abiding in your love” isn’t about “raising our self-esteem,” but rescuing us from death itself.

Jesus, knowing you are committed to healing us, and are praying for the fullness of our joy, makes all the difference. Thank you. So very Amen we pray, in your magnificent and merciful name.
