Be at Rest Again

Let my soul be at rest again, for the LORD has been good to me. Psalm 116:7

Lord Jesus, what a great and gracious Savior you are. Your patience is inexhaustible, your welcome is irrevocable, and kindness is inextinguishable. There is no savior like you; there is no savior but you.

I have to laugh at my fickleness of heart. That’s certainly a lot more redemptive than beating ourselves up when we mess up. I thought by now I’d be sitting in my favorite chair, at home in Franklin, TN. But instead, I’m sitting in a comfortable chair, in the lobby of Homewood Suites, in Bozeman, MT. A wonderful long-weekend retreat segued into a late morning missed flight.

No one is to blame; no one is at fault. But it didn’t take long for me to lapse into a mild case of restlessness, a low-grade irritability, and a micro pity-party. Such is my weakness; such is my daily need of your grace.

Then your Word came to the rescue. Indeed, “let my soul be at rest again, for the LORD has been good to me.” You’re always good to us, Jesus… no matter the circumstance or the story; in our minor inconveniences, and in our big disappointments; when we whine like 3-year-old’s, and when we wrestle with hard providences; when we miss a flight or have a big fight; when suffer big hurts or are insufferably stubborn. You are good, and you delight to give us rest.

I’m not in the doghouse of your disappointment, but in the big house of your delight. As this day ends, I thank you that it’s your kindness that leads me to repentance, your mercy that frees me to be honest, and your love that compels me to be at rest. As tomorrow begins, I will trust you for fresh mercies and all the grace I’ll need to live and love to your glory. So very Amen I pray, in tender and triumphant name.
