As Our God Pleases

Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Ps. 115:3

Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. Isa. 46:9-10 (NLT)

“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2 (NIV)

Heavenly Father, in these passages, three of your sons each faced incredibly disruptive circumstances. Yet they all affirmed the same glorious truth: You are a good, good Father; working in apparent and not so apparent ways; always engaged and always in control.

This is good and centering news for us, as we start this September Wednesday with an Impeachment inquiry of a sitting American president just underway. Help us trust your hand and heart. Help us steward the different emotions this proceeding will stir in the hearts of many.

You’ve always raised up and seated kings at your inviolate and good discretion. You were sovereign over King David’s challenged rule, crazy family, and personal failures. You were sovereign over Isaiah’s difficult ministry, fractured world, and the gigantic promises you gave him to proclaim.

You were sovereign over Job’s losses and betrayals, misery and waiting, health and faith struggles. Indeed, no purpose of yours can be (or will be) thwarted. Our hope is in no mere man, but the God-Man, Jesus—the ruler of the kings of the earth.

Father, help us trust you, however you choose to work in our broken culture, divided nation, and fragile world. We long for the fullness of your Kingdom to come on earth, and soon.

Continue to renew our thinking, gentle our hearts, and deepen our worship. Until the Day Jesus returns, help us rejoice in your faithfulness and rest in your sovereignty. Make the Gospel bigger and sweeter, that we might vex less and trust more. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ powerful and loving name.
