We who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly…” (Rom. 8:23). “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp” (Rev.21:23). We will be “overjoyed when Jesus’ glory is revealed” (1Pet.4:13).

Lord Jesus, we live with a relentless, redemptive ache. It hurts, but it’s good pain. The “firstfruits of the Spirit” won’t leave us alone. We’re tired of the brokenness around us… and in us. And the unavoidable, alluring taste, vision, aroma, and sounds of our coming life in the new heaven and new earth making waiting difficult. Our Spirit-groans are getting more intense, and demand resolution.

We’re like children whining and angling for 3 o’clock snacks before a 6 pm supper. Though it would be easy to settle for less, we want what you want, Jesus, and when you will give it. On this Sunday, September 17, 2023, we honor you as the Prince of Peace, the King of kings, the Lamb of God and the Lamp of the City (Rev.21:23)—where we long to be right now.

Until the Day of all things new and beautiful, fill and free our hearts with your peace, Jesus. Replace our demandingness with gratefulness. Don’t decrease our good groaning, but increase our trust-filled waiting for the Day of our “overjoy.” So Very Amen. we pray, in your tender and triumphant name.
