A Prayer About the Unimaginable
As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:5
Most wonderful, Lord Jesus, I certainly realize that the goal of knowing you is not for me to be made much of, but for the nations, even creation, itself, to make VERY much of you. For you alone are worthy of such honor, praise, and glory. I so long for the Day when you finally will receive the pan-national pan-creation worship you deserve.
That being said, it is profoundly humbling, immeasurably encouraging and utterly transforming to realize how much you actually do make of us, your Bride. To know every one of our sins are forgiven is more than enough reason to praise you for all eternity. To know you have actually covered us with your own righteousness is reason to praise you for ten eternities. But to realize that the righteousness with which you have already clothed us in the gospel is actually a wedding garment, now that’s unimaginable!
Surely, the way you rejoice over us, your Bride, is unlike anything we can imagine-way beyond even the most tender, heart-moving, uninhibited expressions of bridal affection we have ever witnessed. May your enjoyment of us, your delight in us, and your affection for us propel us towards greater felicity in you, Lord Jesus, andgreater fidelity to you.
Indeed, forgive me, Lord Jesus, for living as though I only have a casual dating relationship with you. Forgive me for taking, this, the greatest marriage of all, for granted-for assuming there’s more, somewhere else with someone else. Forgive me for getting used to the demise of the unfettered first-love I had for you, when you first applied your grace to my heart, and betrothed me to yourself forever. You remember those days, even when I don’t.
So, Lord Jesus, please do in my heart what you alone can do… restore, revive, refresh, renew me in the gospel, today… and tomorrow and the next day. So very Amen, I pray, in your name and for your glory.
