A Prayer About the God We Know

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus. Romans 15:5

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

The God of peace be with you all. Amen. Romans 15:33

Dear heavenly Father, your Word never ceases to astonish and nourish, and then cause my heart to flourish. This morning, in particular, I’m so grateful for the commitment you’ve made to reveal yourself through the Scriptures, and to show me how you delight to be known. In just this one chapter (Romans 15) out of nearly 1200 in the Bible, you come to me this very day as…

The God who gives endurance and encouragement. I will need both of these grace-gifts today, Father, as I seek to love other broken people, like myself. Help me to be very quick to listen today… before reacting with criticism or launching with advice. You haven’t called me to fix anybody, but to love everybody as you love me in Jesus. Let me “endure” today not as someone who will find the resources to “put up with” difficult people, but as a man who’s learning to be present and enjoy what you are doing in the lives of all kinds of people.

The God of hope. It’s an increasingly complex world, Father. It feels more uncertain and fragile than ever. Fill my heart with a vision of your finished story—the completion of your covenant to redeem your pan-national family and your commitment to make all things new through Jesus. May such a profound, living hope not serve as an anesthetic to dull my pain or settle my nerves. Rather, may it give me courage to suffer and sacrifice to your glory with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. Indeed, Father, I want to overflow with hope, not just be a slow drip…

The God of peace. Father, you are the consummate peace-maker—reconciling enemies and restoring broken things. I only have peace with you because you have made your peace with me through the work of Jesus. May this profound assurance free me today to live as a conduit of your shalom-making love and power. You are with me and for me, and that is enough…

Father, continue to reveal yourself to me as you delight to be known, even as you continue to free me from all the groundless graceless ways I’ve thought of you for way too many years. So very Amen, I pray, in Jesus’ matchless name.
