Jesus—“the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (1Tim.6:15)
Lord Jesus, this is true all the time, but some days it is essential: You alone are “the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.” In response to the senseless killing of Charlie Kirk, Russian drones being shot down over Poland, alligator-guarded detention centers in our own country, starvation in the Sudan and Gaza, madness and meanness becoming normative rather than episodic throughout our world … what would we do if you are not everything you claim to be—and actually are?
What would we do if you are not the “same, yesterday, and forever”? What would we do if you did not come, are not risen, and will not come again? What would we do without the certainty you crushed evil on the cross and will eradicate it on the perfect Day? What would we do without the hope that you are actively making all things new and will most definitely fill the earth with your glory?
Indeed, “there will be no end to the increase of your government and peace” (Isa.9:7). Many nations have a “monarch for a moment,” others live under “tyrants by terror.” Some countries have prime ministers past their prime or absolute monarchs absolutely bent on enriching themselves. But you are singularly different, Lord Jesus. Only you are Lord. Only you are worthy. Only you are sovereign.
Jesus, we eagerly—sometimes impatiently await your return and the fullness that Day will bring. but you are no less King today than you will be then. Until every knee bows and every tongue confesses you as Lord (Phil.2:10-11), free us to live and love to your glory—in more than one way, not looking to the Left or the Right, but fixing our gaze on you. So Very Amen.
