three questionsI like to be asked thought-provoking questions. However, in our busy lives it is difficult to take time to still our minds and follow Paul’s simple instruction to Timothy, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching” (1 Tim. 4:16). Jesus also instructed his disciples, “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down” (Luke 21:34). Three Questions is a series designed to put forth a few questions once a month. They can be used for personal reflection or perhaps as a way to spur on meaningful conversation in an accountability or small group.

August’s Theme: The Word

  1. In what ways are you currently hearing/learning/teaching/discussing the Bible in community with others? What are some of the benefits you’ve experienced sharing in studying the Bible within community?

  1. How is your personal time in the Word? Thinking back over the past few weeks, how much time are you spending reading, studying, meditating, and memorizing the Word? Which of these areas would you like to grow in the upcoming months?

  1. What is your attitude as you approach the Bible? Are you defensive? Eager? Bored? Hopeful? Distracted? Joyful? Is there any part of the Word that you are disobeying?  In what ways can you turn to the Word with a new willingness to obey today?

Verses for further consideration:

Psalms 1:1-3       Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

John 8:31   So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 15: 7-11 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

James 1:22   But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Psalms 119:11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.

Isaiah 55:11     so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
