Three Questions: Thankfulness

three questionsI like to be asked thought-provoking questions. However, in our busy lives it is difficult to take time to still our minds and follow Paul’s simple instruction to Timothy, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching” (1 Tim. 4:16).

Jesus also instructed his disciples, “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down” (Luke 21:34). Three Questions is a series designed to put forth a few questions once a month. They can be used for personal reflection or perhaps as a way to spur on meaningful conversation in an accountability or small group.

November’s Theme:  Thankfulness

  1. Why is thankfulness an important part of the Christian life? What ways do you give thanks on a regular basis in your life?
  1. What keeps you from thanksgiving? How often during the day do you find yourself grumbling and complaining? How can you foster a thankful heart and an appreciation for God’s work in your life today?
  1. What are some truths about God that give you eternal reasons for rejoicing? How would setting your mind on those spiritual blessings increase your joy today?

Verses for further consideration:

Philippians 4:4-7   Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.  The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication  with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And  the peace of God,  which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Col. 3:15-16   Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Col. 4:2   Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Col. 3:1-2   Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Revelation 7:9-12   After this I looked, and behold,  a great multitude that no one could number,  from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb,  clothed in white robes, with  palm branches in their hands,  and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”  And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and  the four living creatures, and they  fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,  saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
