Learning to communicate better using the pink Bible

I am extremely busy here this week and have not had much time to sit down and crank out any articles. I have a three part series brewing right now that I am dying to write but it will wait till next week: “Fighting Lust with Lust”. It is fermenting nicely and should be ready to be served at room temp beginning Tuesday.

Last night I was reading to Alaynah (5) and Alexis (3) from First Peter. Lanie grabbed her pink Bible and we went to work. I am, however, finding that specific devotions / bible study with them is more difficult.

For example, as I began to read First Peter 3.3 (NIV)… “your beauty should not come from outward adornment…” Lexi immediately started laughing, almost uncontrollably. I started again and she, once again, erupted. I said, “Lex, what is so funny?” She answered, “You said, ‘booty’!!”

I told her that I said, “Bewww-Teee” not “Booo-Teee”. She said, “Booty is a bum-bum” and then started laughing again.

Alaynah, who is a remarkably mature and perceptive five year old, sensed that this was not getting better, told her younger sister, “Lexi, princesses don’t say bum-bum” and then she said, “Daddy said, beauty like pretty.” To which Lexi replied, “Oh.”

I think I broke a sweat. It was so fun though trying to teach this passage to them. Lexi did not get much of it, but Lanie did. It was so encouraging to hear her say, “I want to please God.” Little girls have a natural power to melt their Dad’s heart, but mixed with a childlike confession like this and I was virtually undone. She is so sweet.

All of this to encourage you (along with myself) in the pursuit of humility and again to the task of family devotions while seeing the need to occasionally mix it up so as to speak and teach to specific hearts with specific needs.
