Insecurity, corruption, and violence often fill the front pages of Central American newspapers. In response, many people are searching for peace and justice. But instead of finding that relief in the good news of the gospel, hundreds of thousands have fallen prey to the false news of the prosperity theology that has proliferated in most of the Spanish-speaking world.
One worship leader recently recalled a meeting where the guest preacher spent more than an hour asking people to come to the front in order to be blessed. He began by calling them to the altar by denomination (in the local currency): 500, 1,000, 2,000, 10,000, whatever you wanted to offer. Then he moved on: your belt, your chain, your shoes—even the keys to your car. That was the way to be blessed by God, and to prove your faith to Christ. Hundreds came forward.
Such teaching has diverted and inoculated hundreds of thousands from the true faith. But in God’s kindness, things have changed significantly over the last few years. Not a week goes by that we don’t hear a testimony of a family, a pastor, or even a whole church that abandons the lies of that false gospel and embraces the truths of Scripture. In the Spanish-speaking world, God is at work, maybe now more than ever!
Ways to pray:
- Give thanks for the thousands who are leaving prosperity teachings and hearing the voice of the Savior
- For the sheep who are being deceived by wolves, that they might soon wake up and return to the way of the cross
- For the ministry of TGC Spanish as it continues to proclaim the good news of salvation through articles, podcasts, videos, and resources
