Equipping the Church to Bring Theology to Life

More Videos

Seminary is strategic. While it must never replace the primacy of the local church, it is a unique training ground for equipping God’s people to bring theology to life within the various spheres to which he calls them.

Donald Sweeting, president of Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) in Orlando, Florida, sat down with Mark Mellinger to discuss how he’s aiming to use his position to wield influence on future ministers. “As point leaders in the church, pastors have a massive impact on everyone else,” explains Sweeting, who himself has two decades of pastoral experience. “Most significantly, they are entrusted with the gospel of Christ and the Word of God.” Facilitating their faithful ministry, then, is one of the most thrilling assignments he believes he could have.

A “multidenominational yet confessional” institution, RTS aims to remain closely tethered to the church and to equip graduates to “think Christianly” wherever the Lord may deploy them. Moreover, Sweeting, who teaches church history, compares the subject to a rearview mirror. “When driving, you need your sideview mirrors to know what’s going on around you,” he explains, “but you need your rearview mirror to help you go forward fast. Church history is like a rearview mirror in the life of the church.”

Watch the full six-minute video to hear Sweeting discuss the role of Reformed theology in evangelicalism, the global vision of RTS, and more.
