Overwhelming Needs and Underwhelming Resources

The disciples said to Jesus, “Send the crowds away (5000 men + family members) so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.” But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “With what?” they asked… “How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.” They came back and reported, “We have 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.” (Mark 6:36-38)

Lord Jesus, the circumstances vary, but many of us are facing overwhelming needs with underwhelming resources. I’m especially mindful of healthcare workers as this day begins. Yesterday, a dear friend had a 6 hour wait at a walk-in clinic. Those needing care outnumbered the care-givers about “5000 men + family members” to “5 loaves + 2 fish.”

Many of us are experiencing this same stressful scenario in several sectors of life—business, relationships, ministry, etc. As with the disciples in the hungry-crowd story, we can either tell you what to do, Jesus—as though you need our advice. Or we can listen to what you’re telling us to do.

When you say to us, “You feed them,” it’s our opportunity to bring our “very little-ness “to your “very much-ness.” It may seem crazy, but that’s always the way of the Gospel. In fact, all we contributed to our salvation was our need. You brought the riches of your grace.

“Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them… Afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish” (Mark 6:41-44). Whatever our overwhelming need and underwhelming resources, do the same for us. Bless, multiply, and bring great glory to yourself. So Very Amen.
