A Prayer for Hearing God’s Laugh in a World That Makes You Angry

A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. Ps. 37:10-13 (NIV)

Dear heavenly Father, I so look forward to the day when I will actually hear you laugh—a laughter that already fills the counts of heaven and the chambers of eternity; for that will be the Day when every expression of darkness and death, evil and folly, meanness and wickedness will be totally eradicated. It’s hard to conceive of our world devoid of every semblance of sin and brokenness, and filled to overflowing with your goodness, truth, and beauty; but you have promised that Day and Jesus has secured that Day.

Though not as quickly as we’d like, but more certainly than we can imagine, the Day of “all things new” is coming. And as this Scripture highlights, it’s not the powerful and proud who will “inherit the earth and enjoy great peace”, but “the meek.” Therefore, I praise you, Father, for the meekness of Jesus, who like a lamb (the Lamb) was lead to the cross—taking our sin (my sin), defeating the devil, and securing the transformation of all things. It is in union with Jesus that, we too, will inherit the earth—as mind-boggling and heart-humbling a thought as that is; and it’s in union with Jesus, that we too become humble and meek, and there useful in your kingdom service.

Father, forgive my fearful fretting, cynical unbelief, and vengeful musings. Vengeance belongs to you, not me. My wickedness deserves your judgment just as much as it requires your grace. Make me a meek man who grieves evil, but one who lives with hope—your son and servant, living in your story to your glory.

So when wicked plots and gnashing teeth seem to be on the increase and righteousness seems to be on the decrease, please, Father, allow us to hear your laughter. May your joy be our strength, your promises be our confidence, and your timing be our schedule. So very Amen we pray, in Jesus’ tender and triumphant name.
