Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. (Ps. 143:8). I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. (Ps. 63:2-4)

Dear Lord Jesus, I’ve always been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What we consume early will greatly determine the rhythms and pace of the rest of the day. I know this to be true, especially on the mornings when meager sleep segues into a way-too-busy day, and I choose to break the evening fast with too much caffeine and too little protein. The law of nutritional diminishing returns quickly sets in.

But on a far more profound level, what we put into our minds and hearts, as the day begins, affects a whole lot more than our energy level. So, today, out of equal measures of delight and having-learned-my-lesson-the-hard-way, I make the psalmist’s cry my own: “Let me hear in the morning (this morning) of your steadfast love” (Ps. 143:8). That’s what I need to feast on more than anything else.

Lord Jesus, only your love is better than life. Only your love meets the deepest needs in my soul, and satisfies my most intense longings. Only your love is unwavering, unrelenting and irrevocable; for all other loves are filled with conditions and contingencies. Only your love is unfailing, trustworthy and irrepressible; for all other loves are fickle and finite.

Only your love can expose and replace the idols of my heart. Only your love can break my self-indulgent chains and set me free to love well. Only your love can heal the greatest heart-wounds I carry, and the ever-present brokenness, which I too easily deny. Only your love can move me from navel-gazing to kingdom living. Indeed, when it comes to your love, Jesus, I can think of a lot more “only’s,” it can alone can do and be.

So, this morning and every morning, (afternoons and evenings too), override our unbelief and overwhelm our hearts you’re your compelling love. By the Holy Spirit, preach the gospel to our hearts, for the gospel is the word of your unfailing love. Only in the gospel do we hear and experience your unfailing love. So very Amen we pray, in your tender and trustworthy name.
