A Prayer for the Peace of Providence

At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” Dan. 4:34-35
The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.” Rev. 11:15
Dear Lord Jesus, it’s one of those seasons again when we need to be reminded of which kingdom and which King is actually in control. “Frankentorm” is approaching the East Coast with fury and ravaging threats; suicide bombings continue on a daily basis; human slavery abounds; weapons-grade uranium is being produced by politically unstable nations—all of this adds up to a recipe for fear-mongering, bad theology and self-preoccupation.
But we will refuse to let the political pundits and prophecy pirates interpret the crisis events of the world for us. You alone are God, and there is nothing else but wanna-be-gods and demigods. You have spoken in your Word, and you have not stuttered. Speak to us, your servants listen.
Lord Jesus, you have no rivals, contingencies, or concerns. There’s no sweat on your palms, vacancy in your eyes, or vexation in your heart. You set up kings and you sit them down at your discretion. You live forever, your dominion is eternal, your kingdom endures, and you do as you please, period! Even as you brought King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to his theological and political senses, so keep us in gospel sanity as make the occupied throne of heaven more distinct in our view.
Today, right now, we affirm that you, Lord Jesus, are already the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. All authority, on heaven and earth, has been given unto you. We’re not waiting for the day you will become the true King, for you are already reigning over all things at the right hand of God our Father. The government of is already on your shoulders and your kingdom is the only unshakable kingdom. Of the increase of your government and peace there will be no end, for you will reign forever and ever, Amen!
You play no national favorites, for you are the pan-national Savior and the pan-universal Lord. So we bow down—we humble ourselves, and honor you as our King, Sovereign, and Lord. And we raise our hands and hearts in adoration, for you lived and died to make us your Bride and queen. We will reign with you forever in the perfections of the new heaven and new earth. What wondrous love is this, indeed! Until that Day, empower us to live as peace-makers and grace-servants, in a world that feels out-of-control and threatening. So very Amen we pray, in your holy and loving name.
