A Prayer for Setting the GPS of Our Heart

May the Lord direct your hearts to the God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. 2 Thess. 3:5
Keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. Jude 21
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Cor. 13:14
Holy Father, the hymn writer must have been thinking about me when he penned the words, “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Take my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.” There are days when my heart instinctively races in many foolish, aimless, even destructive directions.
Some days I wake up with my heart running to self-pity, when disappointments loom larger than your delights. Some days, when my insecurities are more pronounced than your grace, the GPS of my heart defaults for the address of man’s approval and acceptance.
Some days I lace up my running shoes for a quick jog to unforgiveness and bitterness, when I’ve been rehearsing the failures of others, more so than the riches of the gospel. Still other “unguarded heart days” I take little side trips into greed, envy, resentment, lust, whining, self-righteousness, fear, and a whole host of other fruitless destinations.
So today, Father, I want you to answer the apostle Paul’s prayer on my behalf, and also on behalf of my friends. Please direct our hearts into the lavish resources of your love and the much-needed perseverance of Jesus. By the power of your sovereign goodness, reel in my wandering heart once again and send it into the glorious refuge of your love. Where else could I possibly want to be than in the precincts of your lavish, joyful, unwavering affection?
Lord Jesus, thank you for already giving me a new heart through the new birth. I praise you that it is your perseverance, not mine, that will keep me safe and deliver me home at last.  Holy Spirit, I praise you for being the firstfruits and guarantee of the perfected heart I’ll receive one Day. Heavenly Father, I bless you for your commitment to bring to completion the good work you have begun in me. This is my peace, hope and joy. So very Amen I pray, in Jesus’ trustworthy and triumphant name.
