And when they [Joseph and Mary] had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. Luke 2:39-40

Dear Lord Jesus, everything connected to you reveals beauty, in one way or another. And if irony can be beautiful, this part of the story of your incarnation presents the most beautiful irony ever. Joseph and Mary were such faithful and loving parents, from your conception to your crucifixion. After you were born, they did everything required by the Law of the Lord on your behalf. But little did they realize you were born to fulfill everything required by the law of the Lord for them . . . and for us.

Oh, wonder of all wonders, joy of all joys, peace beyond all understanding! My heart sings and soars as I reflect upon your humility, your kindness, and your servant love for us, Lord Jesus. You didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it on our behalf.

What we could never do, you’ve done for us. What we could never be, you became for us. What we are destined to become, you are working in us. The law demands a righteousness and a beauty which come to us freely and fully in you. The full favor of God rests on you and we have that same favor only because we are at rest in you.

Your last words from the cross, “It is finished,” have become our first words of freedom. It’s not our obedience, but yours in which we trust. It’s not our righteousness, but yours in which we boast and rest. By the same grace you saved us, you are now changing us. There is no grander state nor firmer standing, than our standing in grace.

As this gospel continues to make us sane, we are trusting it will make us more and more whole—more like you, Lord Jesus. Having fulfilled the law for us, now fulfill your pleasure in us. Free us to love what you love, and love as you love, until the Day you return to finish making all things new. So very Amen we pray, in your merciful and mighty name.
