He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. Revelation 2:17

Gracious Jesus, who’d have thought that a quick run to Publix this afternoon would result in a painful study in “naming”? I’m sure the little boy in the cart in front of me has another name than “So-much-trouble” and “Such-a-bother.” I hope the husband in the paper-goods isle calls his wife more loving names than “Slow,” “Wasteful” and “Indecisive”. We live and die by the names we’re given, and we harm or heal by the names we give one another.

I came home so thankful for your name, Jesus. You’ve been given the name that’s above every name. It’s by your name we’re completely forgiven; have declared righteous in the sight of God; are being healed of every disease; are being set free from every bondage; and are being prepared for life in the new heaven and new earth. Indeed, Jesus, at your name one Day, I’ll gladly bow my knees with everyone in heaven and on earth and under the earth, declaring that you are LORD, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).

It’s only because you overcame sin and death for us that I dare call myself “overcomer” and look forward to the “hidden manna” of heaven. It’s only because you’re re-naming us in the gospel that I’m being delivered from every wrong, cruel, damaging name others have given me, and the ones I’ve given myself.  It’s only through the grace and glory of your name that I’m learning to be very careful what I label and name others.

Jesus, I don’t know if you’re literally going to give us a white stone with a new name on it when you return. I’m sure we won’t be disappointed, one way or another. But it’s enough for now and eternity that you already call us “beloved.” So very Amen, I pray, in your merciful and matchless name.
