Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One. “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.” The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.” I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. Psalm 2:1-8

Dear Jesus, it’s a great privilege to live in a country which sets aside this Tuesday in November our population to fill the polls and vote our consciences. It’s also a great responsibility, and we ask you for wisdom as we exercise this incredible right.

Depending on one’s political persuasion, many people in our country will begin today pinning their hopes on a change in the constituency of our Congress. Many will end their day pining about the loss of hope… all because of who was or wasn’t elected.

But as your people, we will vote today remembering you as the already-installed King of Zion—the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Our confidence and hope are bound up with seeing the occupied throne of heaven and hearing the laughter of God’s heart. Increase the clarity of our vision and fine tune the accuracy of our hearing.

Jesus, you are sitting in session at our Father’s right hand… working all things together after the counsel of your will and working in all things for the good of those who love you. You don’t merely rule over “spiritual matters,” but over all things—things on the earth, above the earth and below the earth. You are the Lord of redemption and restoration, for you created all things: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things were created by you and for you (Colossians 1:16).

Deepen our understanding about your current and coming reign. Strengthen our faith in you as “the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God”… to whom belongs all “honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Tim. 1:17)

Only your kingdom is unshakeable and everlasting. Only your government will bring the justice, righteousness and peace for which we long. Our Father has made the nations your inheritance and the earth your possession, therefore, we will rejoice and be glad.  We will seek to vote today to your glory, as good citizens of America, and we will seek to hope today, as citizens of your everlasting kingdom. So very Amen, we pray, in your sovereign and triumphant.
