A Prayer About Being Claimed by God’s Promises

Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians. 7:1

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 2 Peter 1:4

Dear heavenly Father, the “farther up and further in” I go into the gospel, the more you challenge and change my old notions… really, about everything. It’s just another grand example of your commitment to bring to completion the good work you’ve begun in me… in all your children… and in the entire creation. At times this process is quite painful, but it’s always about more glory for you and more Christ-likeness in me. And that’s a very good thing.

Today I’m thinking about two radically different ways of approaching your promises, so graciously and copiously given to us in your Word. On one hand, there’s the way I was taught under the tutelage of pragmatists, materialists and triumphalists. It was as though you were just waiting to be told what to do. All I had to do was “to claim the promises,” without negative thoughts or a wavering will, and I could have a life of personal peace and affluence. And as cynical as I’m now inclined to be, Father, you know how long that sounded really good to me… but now, it’s silly, scary and so sad…

Thankfully, on the other hand… the gospel hand… I now see and understand that all your promises are about changing me, not programming you.  And all your promises direct my gaze away from me, to Jesus, who is the ultimate “Yes!” to every promise you’ve made (2 Cor. 1:20). Oh, the difference the gospel makes… I don’t so much claim your promises as they claim me!

Indeed, Father, if I’m going to “name and claim” anything, may it be a greater passion to be like Jesus… in word, thought and deed. May my “standing on your promises” lead to bowing to your glory… living under your authority…  being filled with your joy… and loving well until the Day Jesus returns to finish making all things new.  So very Amen, I pray, in Jesus’ triumphant and transforming name.
