A Prayer About Comforters
For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn-conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus. 2 Corinthians 7:5-6
Heavenly Father, the incidental pictures in your Word are just as profound and encouraging as the intentional promises. This vignette of a conflicted Paul tasting your comfort through the care of a good friend makes my heart sing, especially as I begin this day pretty doggone worn out.
Thank you, Father, for reminding me know that even your most faithful servants, those who know you the best, those whose grasp of the gospel is a zillion times better than mine… even THESE men and women experience restlessness, fear and weariness. At times I still labor under the myth of an attainable “super-spirituality.” If I just prayed enough, believed enough, or was filled with the Spirit enough, I would never get discouraged or downcast. What a groundless toxic myth.
I praise you that you comfort us when we are downcast. You don’t deride us, chide us, hide from us, you comfort us. For truly, you are “the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort” (2 Cor. 1:3). And I praise you, Father, for the comforters you send us. Though you are quite capable and notable for sending ravens and rainbows as gifts of comfort, more often than not, you send a Titus to a Paul, or a Phoebe to a Paul (Rom. 16:1), or any of a number of your daughters and sons. For truly, we are called to encourage one another and all the more as we see the Day of Christ approaching.
So help me live today, honest about my weakness, expectant of your comfort, and thankful for the comforters you may send. And equally, Father, let me be sensitive to your Spirit’s promptings for how I might extend your comfort to other weary travelers. To whom might I be a conduit of your mercy and grace? So very Amen I pray, in Jesus’ name.
