Moral Revolutionaries and their Potty Talk

When you read the news lately it seems like we are caught up in a playground battle of “one-upping”. Like kids swapping tales by the swings, news agencies pushing out stories that say, “Oh, yeah, have you heard about…?”

Each day we read of new developments in this moral revolution in America. Then we read of a story in Houston that is frankly so insane that it sounds like it was made up by a kid under the monkey bars.

The city of Houston passed the now infamous “bathroom bill”. Among other things, this allows people to use the restroom of their choice, based upon their own self-chosen gender identity. This means that men who say that they are women can walk into the ladies’ room and vice-versa.

You can see how this sounds like it was made up on the playground:

“But how are we going to get in there (the girls’ bathroom)?”

“We’ll just dress up like a girl.”

“But we aren’t girls.”

“Doesn’t matter. We’ll tell them that we think we are really girls.”

“Oh…”

The only thing more difficult than understanding this moral confusion is keeping up with it; a new story seems to come out daily.

When you think through what is being said there is a common theme. These headlines have just as much to do with theology as they do anthropology. At every turn, the moral revolutionaries are asserting their claim to divinity, or at least to their ability to act like they are.

Consider the issue of gender. This is something that we really can’t chose. I know there are many who would argue with this today but I can go to a newborn nursery in a hospital and see pretty quickly that these newborns had about as much to do with their eye color, number of toes, and the breath in their lungs, as they did their gender. Creating and declaring gender is God’s job. He is the Creator and we are the creation. When we say that we can declare our gender we are making a claim to deity. This is why it is such a theological statement. And, it is not a new idea either. In Romans chapter 1 we read that this Creator / creation confusion is a staple of this fallen world:

“because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.” (Romans 1:25)

The same is true with virtually every other item on the progressive agenda.

Homosexuality: I choose how to express my sexuality, not anyone else, especially my “Creator”.
Extra-marital sex: I choose how to express my sexuality, not anyone else, especially my “Creator”.
Abortion: I have authority over my body, not anyone else, especially my “Creator”.
Transgender: I can chose what gender I want to be when I want to be it, not anyone else, especially my “Creator”.

People are surprisingly theological for as much as people want to take “God” out of the public square.

When you consider a story like the Houston restroom ordinance it sounds ridiculous. Then you remember that this is actually very theological; in their view “god” said it was ok. And who can argue with that?
