Don’t Waste Your Morning Breath!

Everyday we wake up and are reminded within minutes that while we have been sleeping the inside of our mouths have not. We have morning breath. Everyone around us knows it. And worst of all: we know it. Our mouth tastes chalky and disgusting. We hurry to the remedy, our trusty toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Here we are reminded everyday we are reminded that this world does not taste right. Even when we are enjoying the privilege of sleeping it leaves a horrible aftertaste.

We of course don’t complain about this; we expect nothing less. It is a fact of life that our breath will stink when we wake up in the morning. We know that our mouths will dry out over the night, bacteria will reproduce rapidly, and our tongue will turn into the equivelant of a dirty gym sock. Gross.

Here’s the deal: I don’t want a world filled with bacteria, chalky taste, and halitosis. I want a world where every waking moment is the full enjoyment of all that is good. I want my mouth coated with the sweet taste of fresh fruit of paradise and my mind reflecting on its perfection. I want to enjoy all of life without the poke in the eye from the curse of sin. This world is broken and my bad breath testifies to it.

I long to be in that new City where Christ is the mayor and righteousness dwells. That place that has been made new and had sin abolished, the curse removed, and eternal delight as its reward. I want to enjoy all of the perfection that God intended through his creation. I long to recline on the great river through the City of God while taking in the most glorious view and enjoying all of perfection perfectly (Rev. 21-21).

Each morning I wake up I am reminded that I am not there. But I am also reminded that because of the gospel, I am going there. All who are in Christ are sojourners, walking through this world on their way to the Celestial City. Christ has purchased a glorious bounty of blessing for all his people to enjoy, chief of which is the privilege of knowing and enjoying him.

The point of all of this admittedly atypical mediation is this: Don’t Waste Your Morning Breath! Go and grab a toothbrush and remind yourself of this world’s brokenness and the beauty of the world to come.
