Book Review- Church Planting is for Wimps

Church Planting is for Wimps The title is intriguing. What does he mean by wimps? Does it mean wimps church plant while strong people do other things? Or does he mean that you have got to be weak in order to do what needs to be done as a planter?

As a planter myself, this title intrigued me.

I quickly found out that he means that in order to be used by God you must be cognizant of your own weakness as informed by God’s word and God’s power. That is, church planting is to be done by guys who are not too impressed with themselves but but impressed with God. In order to showcase the greatness of Christ you have got to get over yourself.

The book is a story. It is a story of how the author, Mike McKinley, came to be a church planter. It is a story of how God worked through various circumstances to bring about a faithful church in an area that lacked one. Along the way McKinley reminds us, by experience and Scriptural conviction, the means by which God builds his church. God uses his word among his people by his Holy Spirit to produce love for Jesus to his own glory and fame.

The story is that McKinely comes on staff to plant a church through Capital Hill Baptist (Mark Dever’s church). After a couple of years McKinley and a few others find a church in their target area that has significantly regressed. It did not have a pastor but they did have money and a building. After a series of God-ordained events they brought McKinely and his team in to replant this church. It is a great story.

McKinely is a pastor. Therefore, he writes with a pastor’s heart to encourage pastors to be faithful. In my view, he hit his mark. I was encouraged and rejoicing in what God has done there. I also began to dream a bit bigger and pray a bit harder for what God would do in our context.
