Dealing with Guilt

At the recent Desiring God Conference a question was asked to John Piper about dealing with guilt. Piper gave a concise and helpful answer. He told people not to recoil against guilt and in so doing ignore it. But instead to deal with guilt the same way that we will deal with it on the day of judgment, by clinging to the perfect and prevailing righteousness of Jesus Christ.

This little quote, which I probably paraphrased, was extremely helpful for me. Too often guilt inhibits joy, but it should not be. The conviction of the Holy Spirit is to bring the awareness and hatred of our own sin. The subsequent guilt and feelings of unworthiness is not an end of themselves but rather a vehicle to drive us to see the prevailing beauty and efficacy of the righteousness of the Lamb who was slain.

Romans 8:33-34 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died- more than that, who was raised- who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
