Q&A Friday: What are some good books on Justification?

Martin Luther once said, “This article of justification by grace alone, through faith alone, is the head and cornerstone of the church, which alone begets, nourishes, builds, preserves and protects the church. Without it, the church of God cannot subsist but one hour.”

I remember that when the gospel was beginning to get a hold of me the study of justification became almost ever consuming. (note: we never master the gospel it masters us). It was then that I started digging through books that taught this doctrine with biblical fidelity. I received a question recently regarding which books are good helps in studying this great doctrine. Below is my shortlist (not exhaustive).

The God Who Justifies, by James White: White’s book is a classic. He unpacks the doctrine faithfully while anticipating opposition (as he does so well). Perhaps the most valuable is his exegetical treatment in the back third of the book. This section deals with the primary justification passages. If you buy only one book, I recommend this one. (if you are looking for some free White audio see here, for his visits to OBC)

Counted Righteous in Christ, by John Piper: Piper wrote this book as a reaction to those who are suggesting the abandonment of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness. This a a very helpful and readable book.

Faith Alone, by RC Sproul: Sproul wrote this in the context of the ECT controversy, so it deals heavily with the distinction between Protestants and Catholics.

The Justification of God, by John Piper: Piper deals with Romans 9 and specifically of God’s vindication. Very helpful indeed.

Systematic Theology, by Wayne Grudem: Everyone should have a Systematic Theology, and there is probably not a better one in print today than Grudem. He is reformed and charismatic. So there are things that I obviously would not agree with being a cessationist who sees a future for the nation of Israel, however, with this in mind, this is one of the best in print. His chapters on salvation are easy, readable, and very practical.

Everlasting Righteousness, by Horatious Bonar: Bonar is known for his hymn writing, but his doctrinal writing does not disappoint in this volume.

Living the Cross Centered Life, by CJ Mahaney: This is a book that bleeds out the doctrine into everyday life. I really like this little book. Mahaney humbly shares his shortcomings but encourages us all to live out the reality of justification.
